ASTRONOMY

OLA'S MESSIER MARATHON - Observatório do Lago Alqueva (OLA), Monsaraz.


On this night, OLA organizes its first Messier marathon. This is an ambitious challenge, to observe 110 objects from Messier catalogue in a single night. In order to do so, several telescopes will be available to those who want to join OLA in this challenge. The objects are going to be explained during the observations. OLA also invite amateur astronomers to bring their own equipments and use the observing platforms for free.

SCIENCE CAFÉ: 2019 - 50 years of the Man on the Moon and 100 years of Eddington at Prince - Observatório do Lago Alqueva (OLA), Monsaraz.


On this Science Café we intend to outline two important landmarks to the construction of our knowledge of the Universe: the 50 years of the first time man walked on the Moon and the centenary of the solar eclipse of May 29th 1919, which led Eddington to the then remote island of Prince, on which have been done the observations that allowed to experimentally validate the General Theory of Relativity of Einstein.

CELESTIAL EVENT

NEW MOON - The Moon will located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

ASTRONOMY

ASTROPHOTOGRAPHER FOR ONE NIGHT - Observatório do Lago Alqueva (OLA), Monsaraz.


Initiative for those who already do photography and want to start doing landscape astrophotography. During two hours the participants will learn the basic camera definitions that will allow them to acquire night photos. The session will start with a brief theoretical introduction followed by exercises in OLA’s field. Registration limited to a maximum of 5 participants.

In 1892, legendary Army Capt. Joseph Blocker reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief and his family back to their tribal land. Embarking on a harrowing and perilous journey from Fort Berringer, N.M., to the grasslands of Montana, they soon encounter a young widow whose family was killed on the plains. The travelers must now band together to survive a punishing landscape that's crawling with hostile Comanches and vicious outliers.

CELESTIAL EVENT

LYRIDS METEOR SHOWER - The Lyrids is an average shower, usually producing about 20 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by dust particles left behind by comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher, which was discovered in 1861. The shower runs annually from April 16-25. It peaks this year on the night of the night of the 22nd and morning of the 23rd. These meteors can sometimes produce bright dust trails that last for several seconds. The first quarter moon will set shortly after midnight, leaving dark skies for the what could be a good show. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Lyra, but can appear anywhere in the sky.
